When Rain Brings the Magic – Liza & Ciaran’s Joyful Wedding at the Macdonald Crutherland Hotel, East Kilbride

A Rainy Day That Sparkled With Joy

If there’s one thing we can never plan for in Scotland, it’s the weather. Liza and Ciaran’s July wedding at the Macdonald Crutherland Hotel in East Kilbride was proof that sometimes, when the rain just won’t quit, you simply lean in — and magic happens anyway.

From the moment I arrived, the forecast promised a very wet day, but rather than dampening anyone’s spirits, it somehow added to the laughter, closeness, and warmth that carried through every single moment.

Morning Moments and Heartfelt Gifts

The morning began with that beautiful buzz of excitement that only a wedding day can bring. Liza and her bridesmaids were in high spirits, the room filled with chatter, hairspray, and a playlist of classics that had everyone singing along. One of the sweetest parts of the morning was when both Liza and Ciaran received gifts from each other — those quiet, emotional moments that make you pause and remember why you’re there.

Then came one of my favourite parts of any wedding morning — the bridesmaid and family reveal. The look on everyone’s faces as they saw Liza in her dress for the first time was pure joy (and a few tears, of course). Jamie, one of Liza’s best friends who proudly gave her away, had a reaction that no one will forget — full of love, pride, and emotion.

When a Strap Pops at the Perfect Moment

By the time we headed down for the ceremony, the rain was still falling steadily, but the atmosphere inside was warm and glowing. The ceremony, led by Sheila Scobie, was one of those truly heartfelt ones — full of laughter, sincerity, and personality.

As the guests settled in, Alex Graham, the incredible pianist, played Liza down the aisle, filling the room with the most beautiful live music that made the moment feel even more special.

And then came the moment. Just as Liza and Ciaran began their handfasting ceremony — a beautiful nod to Scottish tradition — her dress straps decided to give up! It was one of those perfectly imperfect moments that had everyone laughing, and it somehow made the whole thing feel even more personal and real.

A Traditional Touch: The Receiving Line

After the ceremony, instead of heading straight into couple portraits or rushing through formalities, Liza and Ciaran decided to have a receiving line — a lovely nod to traditional weddings. It meant they were able to greet and be congratulated by every single guest. Watching them beam as each person came through was just wonderful.

Because of the rain, guests naturally gathered indoors, chatting and laughing together in the hotel’s warm spaces. It made for a cosy, communal feel that perfectly suited this fun-loving, people-focused couple.

Making the Most of the Rain – The Confetti Tunnel & Group Shots

Outdoor confetti? Not a chance. But we didn’t let that stop us! We set up a confetti tunnel in the glass atrium, which ended up being even better than we could have planned. The light, the laughter, the colour — it was pure joy.

Normally, a long group shot list can slow down the rhythm of the day — but this time, it worked beautifully in our favour. Because everyone was gathered in one place to keep dry, we could move quickly between groups, and the atmosphere stayed so light-hearted and full of energy. There was so much laughter and joking between shots that it felt more like a party than a photo session.

You could just feel how deeply Liza and Ciaran are loved — the big bridal party, the laughter, the teasing, the hugs. Everyone was truly in it together.

Dinner, Speeches & the Sweetest Stories

As the guests were called in for dinner, the bridal party made their grand entrance — and the crowd went absolutely wild! The cheers, the applause, the whooping — it set the perfect tone for the evening ahead.

The speeches were a total highlight. Each one was full of warmth and humour, painting the perfect picture of Liza and Ciaran as a team. One of the best stories? Hearing how they dominated the lockdown quizzes every single week! Every speech had the room laughing, crying, and nodding along — the perfect mix.

Champagne, Music & Magic

Before the dancing kicked off, Liza and Ciaran (with the help of their bridal party) cut their beautiful cake and then filled a champagne tower — an elegant, classic touch that looked absolutely stunning. As The Big Papas played Rat Pack tunes, the couple poured the champagne with the biggest smiles, filling glasses and sharing them out among their guests. It felt like a real celebration of not just the wedding, but everything and everyone they’d built around them.

Throughout the day and into the evening, Hannah, the live guest illustrator, quietly worked her magic — sketching guests, moments, and laughter as the day unfolded. Her drawings became a living memory of the joy and personality of the celebration, something truly unique and unforgettable.

A Party for the Ages

Once the formalities were done, it was time to party — and oh, did they party! The dance floor was full from the very first song, and when the man in the red suit arrived to fire things up with some dance classics, the energy went through the roof. Seeing everyone jump up and down to Fireball was pure chaos — the very best kind.

A Scottish Ending

As the night came to a close, it was time for one final tradition — Loch Lomond. There’s nothing quite like it: the crowd running toward each other with so much gusto, arms flying, everyone singing at the top of their lungs. It was the perfect ending to a day that had been full of laughter, heart, and love.

Despite the weather (or maybe because of it), this wedding was bursting with personality. Liza and Ciaran didn’t let a drop of rain change their plans — they embraced it, laughed through it, and created something completely unforgettable.
